Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
